In April 1967, I met an American hero who was principled, fearless and fast running out of friends in high places, writes Professor Joseph M. Siracusa.

Since I’m never going to get around to writing my memoirs, I would like to tell you about the day I met the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.It was April 1967, the height of the Vietnam War, and I was a graduate student at the University of Denver, attending a seminar entitled “Race & Foreign Policy” at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies.

Before long, King’s relationship with LBJ had deteriorated beyond repair, with the FBI following King’s every step. The immediate response to King’s “bleeding” was largely negative, with both The New York Times and The Washington Post criticising the speech.
