Having not played in the NRL for well over a year, the Storm superstar will front coach Craig Bellamy to determine whether he will be back for Melbourne’s finals bid this week.
Craig Bellamy won’t give the green light for Ryan Papenhuyzen’s long-awaited return to the NRL until after he meets the Storm superstar just hours before naming his team on Tuesday.
Bellamy has insisted he has no expectation on Papenhuyzen returning to the top grade this season, but will sit down with the Clive Churchill Medal winner on Tuesday to determine if he’s ready to be included in his 22-man squad to play against the Titans at AAMI Park on Saturday. Speaking after the Storm’s come-from-behind win over the Dragons on Saturday night, Bellamy said: “He pulled up a little bit sore during the week from a training session and he didn’t do the last couple of sessions of the week.
Nick Meaney has been one of the Storm’s best this year and could allow Bellamy to ease Papenhuyzen back into the NRL via a bench role. While the Storm will delay a call on Papenhuyzen’s comeback until shortly before they name their team on Tuesday, the Broncos have ruled captain Adam Reynolds out of their clash with the Raiders in Canberra on Saturday night.
