Fashion's coolest new magazine is accessible by a QR code
has all the markings of a glossy magazine: Sasha Pivorova on the cover, editorials by photographers such as Rebekah Campbell and Richie Talboy, and photos of the personal desks of Schiaparelli’s Daniel Roseberry and Puppets and Puppets designer Carly Marks. In addition to the striking photos, its pages are also dotted with hefty philosophy essays and imagined texts from historical figures. The magazine isn’t available on newsstands.
The mobile magazine was conceived by Katharina Korbjuhn earlier this year. Korbjuhn, who modeled for Hedi Slimane and has been a consultant for labels such as Tods, has long understood the inner workings of the industry and seen it develop under the influence of digital and social media for over a decade. She began applying a philosophical analysis to fashion, which led her to launch. “It is cultural theory wrapped in fashion,” says Korbjuhn.
The magazine isn’t necessarily an ongoing publication but a “trilogy” of releases—in other words, it’ll end after three installments. “A short lifespan seems so much more au courant with how the world is working,” she says. Each issue will tackle a theme that explores the state of fashion. Her first release is titled “Avantgarde & Kitsch” and focuses on the influence of social media and consumption in fashion. The next issue focuses on the future and the past; the third, the present.
Users are able to almost inhale the succinct information—whether it is an essay or an editorial—at a rapid pace. Throughout the magazine, there are bite-size paragraphs that tackle a number of bubbling points in fashion. In one instance, there is an article about late-stage capitalism and what it means for the creative class , a view on authorship versus open source , and the death of the collaboration .
One of the most poignant tidbits of information is a photoshopped text message from the dictator Joseph Stalin. Here, the fictionalized Stalin writes his “Thoughts on Tiktok,” which cites a passage from his 1938 book. “In a capitalist society, there is an inherent tendency for the attention span of each successive generation to diminish as the experience of an alienation increases. New film and musical forms are pulverizing all content into tinier, more purely sensational fragments.
