Here's what Alabama football assistant coaches said are the coaching points for the defense this week after the loss to Vanderbilt and ahead of the South Carolina game.
. Sure, the Alabama offense had its role in the loss with two turnovers. But by and large, the defense had more struggles.
The defense had troubles getting off the field. It led to Vanderbilt dominating time of possession with just over 42 of the 60 possible minutes. Third downs contributed to that; the Commodores went 12 for 18.So what are the coaching points for the Crimson Tide’s assistant coaches this week? “We would emphasize the same thing whether we lost or we won,” Alabama defensive line coach Freddie Roach said. “Did we play to a certain standard? Did we control our gaps? Pad level, did we play with our hands, did we play with good eye discipline? Regardless of circumstance or situation, those are the things you’ve got to do day in and day out to be successful playing that position."
One of Alabama’s defensive backs coaches, Maurice Linguist, was also asked Wednesday what his coaching points are for the defense. Then he listed off what leads to playing great defense.: “This is a dynamic quarterback like last week that can run around. They’ve got athletic guys on the outside. We want to make sure that we stop the run."“The plan is in place,” Linguist said. “We know what we have to do to go out and get after South Carolina.
