The Big 12 made a countermove to Oklahoma and Texas leaving this week by voting to add BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF
Expansion was on the table from the moment the Sooners and Longhorns announced their departure plans earlier this summer. It became more likely after the Atlantic Coast, Big Ten and Pac-12 Conferences unveiled a vague “alliance,” and the Pac-12 said it would not consider adding members.
Friday’s vote was the result of those meetings. It brings the league’s membership back up to its namesake dozen. There could even be a few years when the league swells to 14 teams. That’s because the timeline for when the various schools will exit and enter the Big 12 is unclear. “Nobody knows when these teams want to go,” said AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco on Thursday. He added that as of Thursday he had not received formal notice from Cincinnati, Houston or UCF on their exit strategy, but was not surprised. “This isn’t my first realignment rodeo,” he joked.
The Big 12 had previously explored adding BYU to its stable in 2016, but the university’s application stalled amid concerns over its restrictive honor code, which states that “homosexual behavior is inappropriate” and bans “all forms of physical intimacy that give expression to homosexual feelings.” Violating the policy is punishable with suspension or dismissal.
