As part of the Sydney Opera House 50th birthday celebrations that start this weekend, the Art Gallery of NSW has chosen the best art created in response to Jørn Utzon’s building.

“Kingo”, as Peter Kingston was known to his friends, lived on Sydney Harbour at Lavender Bay from the early 1970s until he died in September last year. From his wonderfully ramshackle Federation terrace, he had a ringside view of harbour life, which he later explored in detail on his timber launch the M.V. Anytime.

Uniquely attentive to the harbour’s moods, Kingo’s painting is a brilliant evocation of moonlight silhouetting the Opera House sails, which dwarf a mighty little ferry surging past taking its passengers home.Estate of Martin Sharp/Copyright Agency, image © Art Gallery of New South WalesMartin Sharp was one of the first pop-influenced artists in Australia and co-founded the radical satirical magazinein 1963.
