Four swimmers, including New Jersey's Jack Alexy, received the first goal for Team USA on Day 1 of the Paris Olympics.
July 27, 2024, Paris, Ile de France, France: Jack Alexy , Chris Guiliano , Hunter Armstrong and Caeleb Dressel in the men's 4 x 100-meter freestyle relay medal ceremony during the Paris 2024 Olympic Summer Games at Paris La Defense Arena.
“You can’t explain this moment until you’re on the podium watching the flag go up,” Dressel would later explain. The men stepped together onto the podium as they raised their arms in the air in one coordinated motion, just as Dressel had instructed. The crowd went silent. Alexy tucked his right hand under the ribbon of his new medal and covered his heart. The four swimmers looked straight ahead to the other end of the pool, about 60 meters away, where the American flag slowly started to rise. A recording of “The Star-Spangled Banner” began to play.
Alexy stopped in front of a section filled with the families of the athletes. He found his parents, Matthew and Lynn, and the rest of his cheering section. He shared an embrace with his sister, Kate, and finally, the moment got him.
