is stunning—sexy, modern, emotionally complex. Perhaps it’s not that surprising that the novel retained its intellect and heft; Sally Rooney herself wrote most of the scripts and teamed up withdirector Lenny Abrahamson and Hettie MacDonald .
But credit is also due to Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal, the almost unknown leads who anchor this adaptation with extraordinary, fine-tuned performances. On the one hand, the story offeels almost blindly banal: popular boy and awkward but beautiful girl pair up, boy behaves badly, things fall apart. But these two actors give the show an aching nuance that makes this into one of the most heartbreaking—and best—things you’ll see on TV this year.
