The 2022 Tripod Days leading up to the Nenana Ice Classic.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska -The 2022 tripod days, in Nenana, Alaska, were in full swing this past weekend.
The Nenana Ice Classic dates back to 1917, when a group of railroad engineers placed $800 worth of bets for the precise date and time the ice on the Tanana would melt and begin to break up. Standing atop the river is an eight legged tripod, attached to a clock on shore. When the ice moves just enough, it will trigger a mechanism that stops a clock inside of the tripod. The ice this year was measured at 31.7 inches thick.
