In another year of the billionaire bingo that names the nation’s wealthiest, mining and manufacturing is up, technology is down and everything old is new again.
The number of fortunes built on technology has fallen from 27 last year to 24 this year, while the number of manufacturers has risen from 11 to 14; Anthony Pratt and his recession-resistant packaging empire again lead the way. Pratt’s fortune was steady at $24.3 billion, ranking him third.
Technology’s tide receded enough to take a few of its exponents off the Rich List altogether. Tesla chairman Robyn Denholm, veteran computing salesman David Dicker and e-commerce entrepreneur Fung Lam are all 2022 Rich Listers who failed to make the list’s 200th-place cut-off of $690 million this year.
Market-exposed property fortunes such as those of Greg Goodman and Bruce Mathieson therefore had constrained growth, while the likes of Lang Walker andWalker lands at 16th on the list as his wealth surged 15 per cent to $5.81 billion after winning big place-making projects in Sydney’s Parramatta and Blacktown. The indefatigable Triguboff turned 90 this year but still shows up daily at the offices and building sites of his company, Meriton. His wealth was up 12 per cent to $23.
The number of women on the list has fallen by one to 36, an unwelcome manifestation of that “old is new again” theme. The first Rich List back in 1983 included just four women, most of them heiresses.
