Providence head coach Ed Cooley is one of several coaches in the mix for the Michigan coaching vacancy. Michigan AD Warde Manuel can hire the only African-American coach in a league that had 14 white coaches last year
. Butler coach LaVall Jordan and Michigan assistant Saddi Washington -- both of whom are also black -- are also in the mix, as is Michigan assistant Luke Yaklich, who is white. Jordan has been to one NCAA Tournament in two years at Butler. Washington and Yaklich have been key assistants under Beilein, who most recently led Michigan to the NCAA title game in 2018.
I can already see the Twitterverse lighting up with some folks saying,"It shouldn't matter what color the coach is. Just hire the best person for the job."It's a nice sentiment in a universe where the Big Ten doesn't have 14 white head coaches for 14 jobs. “I’m glad to see that black coaches are getting interviewed and being viewed as serious candidates again,” one African-American former Division 1 head coach who requested anonymity."The search firms became the major force behind hirings around 2007. Their limited knowledge of the industry led them to promote people they were comfortable with. As their hiring trends have been highlighted, it has forced search firms to expand their knowledge to build a more diverse list of candidates.
Richard Lapchick, the Director for the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport, told me last year that the NCAA should consider an Eddie Robinson Rule for college basketball hiring.
