Chili then pitches the idea to Harry of adapting his debt-collecting adventure into a movie, but to do so, they need a star attached to help raise the money. Karen, now falling for Chili, secures a producer position by setting up a meeting with her ex-husband, famous movie star Martin Weir.
According to the interview, a jealous Al Pacino wanted the La Brava project for himself, insisting on getting "everything that had Hoffman's fingerprints on it." This certainly didn't do the process any favors and may have accounted for its result as a non-starter. Leonard's realization of Hollywood's constant rivalry and competition inspired his work on Get Shorty, and he admits that his frustrations towards Hoffman were vented through the creation of Martin Weir.
