The former Sydney council worker, Tony Nguyen, said he told a subcontractor to pay him in cash because it’s untraceable.
A Sydney council employee accepted about $60,000 cash in gift bags from a subcontractor in return for helping the company win work on inner west projects, a corruption inquiry has heard.
The Independent Commission Against Corruption is investigating allegations Nguyen and bureaucrats from the state’s transport agency used their positions dishonestly in awarding contracts to various companies for their own benefit in the past decade. Under questioning from counsel assisting the commission Joanna Davidson on Tuesday, Nguyen estimated he had received about $60,000 in cash for helping the company win multiple projects.Nguyen said SDL Project Solutions’ director Seng Du Laphai had delivered cash to him “in a gift bag” on at least two occasions in “various places”.
“I remember calling him and saying I’ve been shortchanged, but it doesn’t matter, don’t worry about it. Just remember for next time.”
