Thais seen tightening purse strings for New Year spending: survey

BANGKOK (ANN): Thai people are expected to spend nearly 50bil baht (RM6.8bil) during the New Year holidays, down 6.7% from last year, according to a research centre.

The Government Saving Bank Research Centre estimated total spending at 49.9bil baht, based on a survey, with average spending per person at 3,550 baht.

Most respondents answered that their source of spending for the New Year was their personal income , followed by savings , government subsidy , and loan . The most popular gifts that grassroots people are planning to buy during New Year are: foods/vegetables/fruits , followed by clothes and healthy drinks .

When asked what they expect from the government as a New Year gift, the majority of grass-roots people listed reducing the cost of living at the top, followed by lowering fuel price and fixing the problem of agricultural product prices plummeting .
