BANGKOK: Thailand is prepared to accept 100,000 people fleeing Myanmar, its foreign minister said on Tuesday (Apr 9), as fighting near a crucial border town rumbled on.

A boat is pictured on the Myanmar side of the Moei river as seen from Thailand 's Mae Sot district in Tak province on Apr 7, 2023. Thailand 's foreign minister said on Apr 9, 2024, that the kingdom was prepared to receive 100,000 people fleeing from Myanmar .

In recent months, Myanmar's army has faced its worst threat yet as fighting from anti-junta groups engulfs previously peaceful areas of the country."We have prepared for a while and we can accommodate about 100,000 people in Thailand's safe area temporarily," Foreign Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-nukara said.

Periodic surges in fighting along the long Thai-Myanmar border saw scores of people temporarily fleeing to the kingdom before returning. However, Parnpree emphasised the Thai-Myanmar border remained open and that trade was still flowing through Mae Sot and into Myawaddy.
