Dallas native Katy Sensenig Schilthuis found talented Texas makers to create a collective that’s now 80 strong.
Kiiing grew up in a Florida town without a lot of diversity and struggled at first with making her cultural art. “I wanted to draw people who looked like me,” she said.Phan has a line of kitchen magnets shaped like sushi, dumplings, mooncakes and Hoisin sauce bottles along with American and Tex-Mex foods. “Many from Asian immigrant cultures are strongly discouraged — as I was by my parents — to pursue art as a career,” Phan said. “They tried their best to get me to study medicine.
Some of the makers lost their jobs during the pandemic, and some just had more time to finally learn a craft they’d wanted to pursue, Schilthuis said. “We have teachers, accountants, people who designed watches or were in corporate roles that were too rigid, and this was a creative outlet.” She had found a source for apparel pieces and started making robes, caftans and tunics when the pandemic hit.
