Two-time and reigning NCAA women’s national champion Texas defeated Stanford by just under two seconds Sunday morning to win the featured Jessop-Whittier Cup varsity eights championship in the 50th anniversary Crew Classic on Mission Bay.
Two-time and reigning NCAA women’s national champion Texas defeated Stanford by just under two seconds Sunday morning to win the featured Jessop-Whittier Cup varsity eights championship in the 50The Texas women also won while finishing ahead of Stanford in the junior varsity eights, the varsity fours and the open eights. Stanford was the runnerup to Texas in the NCAA finals last year.
The Texas varsity eight rowed the 2,000-meter course in six minutes, 29.99 seconds. Behind Stanford were Canada’s national crew, Oxford-Brookes from Great Britain, Washington, California and USC.Cal’s men’s eight won the Copley Cup by 1.68 seconds over Oxford-Brookes. Rowing Canada was third. Cal covered the course in 5:46.776.UC San Diego won the men’s Cal Cup by three seconds over Gonzaga. UCLA was third and USD finished fourth.
