Often called the best 'backup' in the nation, former Longhorn gets his chance in...

Arguably the best"backup" running back in the nation last season, Texas running back Roschon Johnson will begin his pro career with the Chicago Bears.

The Bears selected Johnson with the 115th overall pick in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft on Saturday in Kansas City, Mo. A former dual-threat quarterback at Port Neches-Groves, Johnson converted to halfback a few weeks before his freshman season began and blossomed alongside teammate Bijan Robinson,“Ro was the leader of our football team and was a guy that held himself and his teammates accountable each and every day,” Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said.

Praised for his vocal leadership by both Sarkisian and former head coach Tom Herman, Johnson made the most of his opportunities in the backfield, rushing for 2,190 yards and 23 touchdowns on 392 carries in 47 career games at Texas. Despite playing behind Robinson, Johnson was an All-Big 12 honorable mention as a senior after rushing for 552 yards and five touchdowns on 93 carries and added 128 yards and one touchdown on 14 receptions.

Johnson last season also returned a pair of kickoffs for 39 yards and led the Longhorns with seven special teams tackles, four on kickoffs and a team-best three on the punt unit. His well-regarded pass blocking also appealed to Chicago and a slew of other teams who were reportedly targeting"RoJo" on the final day of the draft.

“Roschon’s just one of those guys when you’re tired in practice or you don’t wanna go somedays, he’s the guy who lifts you up and builds that confidence in you,” Robinson said of his former Texas teammate. “Ro’s been such a huge part for me in my growing stages here. He’s been a leader ever since I’ve been here. He means a lot to me. He did it the right way this whole time and I learned from it, got so many things from him about how to do it the right way.
