Lebarron Johnson Jr. delivered the first complete game of his career to help Texas beat...
Texas pitcher Lebarron Johnson Jr. throws in the first inning against Miami during an NCAA college baseball tournament regional game in Coral Gables, Fla., Saturday, June 3, 2023. After waiting out a two and a half hour weather delay Saturday night, No. 2 seed Texas wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard at Mark Light Field. And with redshirt sophomore Lebarron Johnson Jr. delivering the start of his life, No. 9 national seed Miami never had a chance to recover.
“That’s one great game pitched by LBJ,” Texas coach David Pierce said of Johnson. “This is a kid that wasn’t on the postseason roster last year. Talk about development. Talk about a kid that has just listened and worked. He’s one of the most humbling kids you’ll be around. He pitched his tail off.” Junior second baseman Jack O’Dowd followed Campbell’s homer with one of his own in the second inning, a solo shot to dead center field that gave Texas a 3-0 lead.
“At the end of the day, that’s a really good pitcher,” Miami coach Gino DiMare said of Johnson. “He seemed to be on his game. He got the better of us tonight. And that’s the bottom line.”
