PUBLISHED 7:50 PM CDT Mar. 30, 2023AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Republicans are pushing for election reforms, and once again, Harris County is the target. The measures are being championed by the same lawmakers who led a crackdown on the county's voting methods two years ago. The focus is on reigning in local election officials, who Republicans say stumbled during recent elections
But this time, the focus is more on reigning in local election officials, who Republicans say stumbled during recent elections. They point to last year's March primary, when Harris County was the only one in Texas that took more than 24 hours to fully report results and discovered an additional 10,000 mail-in ballots a week later. In November's election, there were ballot shortages and delayed openings at polling places.
“You shouldn't accept the job, unless you intend to do the job correctly and follow the law,” Sen. Bettencourt said. She added that the bill will dissuade election officials from continuing to do the job. But Sen. Bettencourt said that’s not true.
