Texas' offseason received a boost Friday with receiver Jordan Whittington's decision to...
AUSTIN — Jordan Whittington arrived at Texas in January 2019, a five-star early enrollee with a big smile and bigger dreams. Stick around for three seasons, rack up catches and receiving yards, maybe win a Big 12 title or two then declare for the 2022 NFL Draft.
That was the plan, anyway. Whittington understands now there was some adolescent arrogance swirling within. The road’s rarely that straight and narrow for anyone, even a high-caliber athlete like him. Whittington recently completed his fourth season at Texas. On Friday, the former Cuero standout announced he’ll return for a fifth year. That bit of a news was a major development for Texas, which lost 2022 Doak Walker winner Bijan Robinson and highly-regarded senior running back Roschon Johnson to the NFL draft. Whittington considered joining them but opted to utilize his remaining year of college eligibility for one last campaign with the Longhorns.
“I want to brag on Jordan Whittington,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said before the season began. “Here’s a guy who’s gotten hurt every year. Here’s a guy who last season is leading our team in receiving , didn’t blink, fought back and has worked his tail off to come back. Whittington finished with the best offensive grade and second-best receiving grade among Texas receivers in 2022, per Pro Football Focus. He spent the majority of his time lined up in the slot but split out often and has proved effective regardless of his pre-snap location.
