Texas' dropout rate jumps 34 percent amid covid closures

“This is a national phenomenon,” said Saroja Warner, director of educator development and diversity at the. “When the pandemic started in March 2020, schools were well-prepared to pivot to find ways to support kids on track to graduate three months later. But 2021 ushered in a whole new wave of problems, with most students going into the school year virtually."

TEA officials said the top 20 percent of district identified as having high dropout rates are required to submit a dropout prevention plan to the agency. HISD leaders said that providing students with the non-instructional resources they need allowed more to stay engaged in school. Millions of dollars in federal COVID relief funding have been distributed to local school systems to be used for interventions, including extra tutoring targeted toward students who are not performing at grade level, free meals and more school counselors.

HISD’s efforts were based on vast research that indicates students perform better academically when all of their needs are met and when they feel connected to their school communities.
