Commentary: Texas primaries are more important than the general election, so everyone must vote | J. Peter Kline
Traffic passes a polling place sign outside a Collin County early voting location at Carpenter Park Recreation Center in Plano.Whether you agree with Sen. Joe Manchin’s position on the Biden administration’s Build Back Better Act or the late Sen. John McCain’s vote on saving the Affordable Care Act, you have to take notice of how one politician can determine the outcome of a piece of legislation. Elections do matter, and the March primary may matter more than the general election in November.
With gerrymandered voting districts, winning the primary frequently means winning the general election. This dynamic could be turned around if at least a third of the people who vote in November would turn out to vote in the primaries. Increasing primary turnout by as little as 5% of registered voters could change our polarized political environment.
When you do your research on the candidates running in the March primaries, you will find that most incumbents have little or no mainstream competition for their party’s nomination. Many of the officeholders who have driven the divisive political polarization of the past several years are being primaried by people who argue that even current elected leaders are not conservative enough.
