Texas House OKs bill requiring websites to shield teens from harmful content
The Texas House on Tuesday gave initial approval to a bill that would require major tech platforms to shield teenage users from a wide array of harmful content and give parents more oversight over how their children use the platform.Websites would have to shield teens from emotional and developmental harm under bill prioritized by Texas House speaker
Tech companies and industry groups say the legislation would do nothing to fix those problems, while imposing vague, subjective new rules they couldn't realistically follow. The measure will likely receive final approval from the House tomorrow, after which it will head to the Senate. HB 18 would also require providers to give parents sweeping abilities to control and monitor how their children use the service, and to receive parental consent before collecting data from a minor.
