Texas’ school leaders say the state’s focus should be on providing a strong education for all students — unauthorized immigrants included. Chiseling away at...
But Dallas schools Superintendent Michael Hinojosa called the governor’s concerns “manufactured crises in the name of politics.”
In fact, despite reports of immigrants flooding over Texas’ borders, two of the superintendents — McAllen’s J.A. Gonzalez and Garland’s Ricardo López — said their districts had lost enrollment over the past few years, likely because of the pandemic. Abbott’s comments come with a significant caveat attached: It’s unclear how much Texas spends on education for unauthorized immigrants, because it’s unclear how many students fall under that designation.
The state last examined the issue in 2006, when a report from the Texas comptroller estimated 135,000 unauthorized immigrant students in Texas, roughly 3% of the student K-12 population, at a financial cost of $957 million. Estimated revenues from those immigrants far outstripped that expense, generating $1.58 billion.“It would be pretty, pretty devastating,” Dallas teacher Rosie Curts said on Friday.
Hinojosa — who was born in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, before moving with his family to Lubbock when he was 2 — said he was deeply saddened by Abbott’s comments.
