Under the more loosely regulated “guardian plan,” local school boards can authorize employees to carry guns on campus. District officials are directly responsible for determining training and vetting. Wilcox knows that, statistically speaking, the chance of him ever encountering a gunman in his school is low. Still, each time a similar story dominates the news cycle, he does a gut-check that’s especially hard for the single father of four children.
“That is not my first choice,” Walder said. “But in order to protect myself and my students, that is why I would be willing to carry.” Regular training should also be required as well as a pay increase for the added responsibility, she said. Dickinson stresses to her students that she will do everything she can to protect them, even if that means putting herself in front of them.While guns can be locked away at school, it isn’t impossible for children to get their hands on them, she said.
