A crew of people set up the light rigging and stage ahead of the 2022 Texas Democratic Convention at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas, July 13, 2022.Texas Democrats are kicking off their state convention Thursday in Dallas, where they’ll hone a midterm message that is already taking shape around two major issues — abortion and guns — that have burned their candidates in past elections.
“I think in the past, with all the terrible laws on women’s reproductive health, we always held onto the fact that we had Roe v. Wade,” said state Sen. Carol Alvarado, D-Houston. “OK, all this terrible stuff has happened, but at least we still have Roe v. Wade. And that’s no longer intact.” O’Rourke’s narrow loss to Cruz, followed by an unsuccessful run for president, propelled him to statewide prominence. The rest of the Democratic ticket, however, is unknown to most Texans, with just over half of voters in the Hobby School survey responding that they “don’t know enough to have an opinion” about Collier and Garza.
“GOP candidates lead by anywhere from 6 to 12 points, which is in line with what we would expect of partisan vote choice in Texas,” Shaw said. “The big question for the Democrats is how to convince voters that Texas elections aren’t a referendum on the president and his party.”Biden’s low marks among Texas voters, along with a national economy that has struggled to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, have fueled political optimism among Republicans, even as the polls appear to tighten.
Even after the Uvalde shooting and fall of Roe v. Wade, economic issues easily outpace abortion and gun control on the list of priorities for Texas voters. The Hobby School poll found that roughly two-thirds of likely voters consider the two social issues either “extremely” or “very” important, well behind the top issue: inflation, at 84 percent.
