Prairie View A&M students Mariolqui Rojas, left, Bernard Cunningham and Courtney Sneed sketch out plans for a Juneteenth museum as Prairie View A&M architecture professor Nestor Infanzon, second from right, watches during a recent design charrette.
The idea is to have concepts ready to present to the public by Juneteenth — June 19 — said Sam Collins III, a local historian and co-chairman of the Juneteenth Legacy Project. The event has a special tie to Galveston because Union Army Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger landed on the island June 19, 1865, bringing with him news that the Civil War had ended.
The students proposed various ideas for repurposing the Old Galveston Square building and cultural center and for a new building near the stadium.
