Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton will head to trial on April 15 over his securities fraud charges after more than eight years of delay.
The charges are tied to accusations that in 2011, he attempted to solicit investors in a McKinney technology company without revealing it was paying him to promote its stock. Paxton has denied the accusations.Paxton faces two counts of securities fraud, a first-degree felony that amounts to up to 99 years in prison. He also faces one count of failing to register with state securities regulators, a third-degree felony with a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
State District Judge Andrea Beall announced the trial date during a hearing Monday in Houston, according to the Texas Tribune. Paxton was acquitted last month in a Senate impeachment trial that surrounded separate accusations of bribery and malfeasance made by former top deputies in his office. The Texas House impeached Paxton in May on several articles of impeachment related to the securities case, but the Senate set aside those for the trial and later dismissed them.
