Jackson, who has scored in double figures in 13 consecutive games, has acted as superglue...

A&M’s Quenton Jackson has been the driving force in a late-season surge that has put the Aggies in position to get noticed by the NCAA selection committee with a strong showing in Tampa.COLLEGE STATION — A Californian who played the first part of his college career in Florida helped a Texas school finish around the middle of the Southeastern Conference.

Williams isn’t overstating things on that front, as eighth-seeded A&M faces ninth-seeded Florida at 11 a.m. Thursday in the SEC tournament in Tampa, Fla. The Aggies and Gators are two of five SEC teams finishing 9-9 in league play. Should they beat the Gators, and that game is considered a toss-up, the Aggies likely would be shoo-ins for the NCAA Tournament with a victory over No. 1 seed Auburn on Friday, but also could earn an NCAA berth with a competitive contest against the Tigers.

The 28 points were the most by an Aggie in an A&M victory over a ranked team since NBA star Khris Middleton scored 28 against No. 15 Missouri in 2011. Jackson also made all 11 of his attempts in mid-February in a win over Georgia, becoming only the second A&M player in history to make 100 percent of shots when trying 10 or more .

“If you remember Q’s game in year one and you look at Q’s game now, it’s just a complete metamorphosis,” Williams said of Jackson growing on the run. “He’s still fast and athletic and all of those things, but his game is completely different, and how you have to defend his game now versus year one.”
