The Texans have terminated the contract of former center Justin Britt. The franchise announced the decision on Friday, a move that clears almost $3 million in cap space but leaves the team in need of a starting center.
Britt, 31, signed a two-year, $9 million contract after playing in 11 games despite working through nagging knee injuries. He played in the 2022 season opener, then left the team for the remainder of the year due to “personal reasons.” His release will cost the Texans $1 million in dead money, according to Over the Cap, but will still save the team a moderate amount of money as general manager Nick Caserio prepares to oversee the largest free agency acquisition period in his three-year tenure.
The Texans must now target a center. Scott Quessenberry, Britt’s replacement in 2022, is no longer under contract after his one-year deal expired, and backup Jimmy Morrissey totaled just five percent of the team’s offensive snaps last season.
