Texans relied on faith to get through the past two years | Opinion

A church that bought groceries for a member suffering from COVID-19. Another where the preacher shamed members of the congregation for wearing masks. A Muslim who found hope in the Quran for her father who died in the pandemic. A Sikh woman angry at God for not answering her prayers for her father’s healing. All of these are stories from Texans who leaned on their religious traditions in a time of great stress.

However, there can also be a darker side when considering the role of faith in mental health. Recent literature by author David Morris and minister Carol Howard Merritt has discussed “spiritual wounding” or “spiritual trauma,” in which the religious community itself becomes injurious to an individual’s mental well-being and flourishing.

Another woman explained how her religious community became crucial for giving her the social space to grieve after the death of her mother.
