Houston Texans new offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik hasn't called plays on his own but has strong roots from systems in Washington and San Francisco.PHOENIX — Kyle Shanahan weaves through a ballroom at the Arizona Biltmore and sits at a table crowded with recorders, laptops and cameras. The coaches' breakfast at the NFL’s annual meetings is one of those obvious but unspoken symbols of authority in sports.
Slowik has secured his schematic and philosophical base. He spent three seasons as a defensive assistant under Shanahan’s father, Mike Shanahan, learning the West Coast system in Washington, then,, Slowik spent six seasons as an assistant coach managing and modifying the same system on Kyle’s staff in San Francisco.
“I had no problem calling a lot of risky calls when I was younger, and then you realize why maybe sometimes those are stupid and sometimes why you need to call them,” Shanahan says. “That goes through succeeding and failing. We build off that. I think everyone gets better with the more experience you have.”
“Sometimes you have to get exposed before you really learn it,” says McVay, who’s fielded top-10 scoring offenses in three of his six seasons with the Rams and won Super Bowl LVI.
