The HHS testing czar says the federal government will deliver nearly 1 million rapid, point-of-care coronavirus tests to high-risk nursing homes by the end of the week
The federal government will deliver nearly 1 million rapid, point-of-care coronavirus tests to 1,019 high-risk nursing homes by the end of the week, HHS testing czar Brett Giroir told a House committee on Friday.
The announcement comes after Giroir told reporters Thursday that the administration hopes to deliver 2,400 machines for processing point-of-care antigen tests to nursing homes in states experiencing coronavirus outbreaks in the coming weeks. The efforts are aimed at relieving pressure on commercial testing laboratories while increasing testing of nursing home residents and staff. Giroir said the government is working to locate additional machines for these facilities.
But testing alone is not enough to get a handle on the pandemic, the testing czar told the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis. "Testing does not replace personal responsibility. It does not substitute for avoiding crowded indoor spaces or washing hands or wearing a mask,” Giroir said. “A negative test doesn't mean you won't be positive tomorrow."earlier this month to deliver point-of-care instruments to nursing homes using part of $5 billion being sent to nursing homes for staffing and testing from the
provider relief fund established by Congress. The administration wants to deliver 15,000 testing instruments to nursing homes over the next several months.
