Model, author, and activist Tess_Holliday speaks out about parenting, fatphobia, and anxiety during the coronavirus pandemic.

and well-being. Holliday created the viral hashtag #EffYourBeautyStandards after strangers continually badgered her on social media for her weight ; now, she’s a leading voice in the body-positive community. “[People] can't look past what personal hang-ups they might have about fat hate, and so I sometimes feel like they don't really hear me,” she tells SELF. “Which is fine, because I'm not going anywhere.

I wanted to ask you about fatphobia during the pandemic, and how some people are taking to social media toThe first week we were in quarantine, I posted a funny video being like, I'm so tired of hearing people complain about the weight that they might gain. Who cares? We're in an actual pandemic. And that's still how I feel.

I've never been away from him. His dad takes the best care of him, but it's been really hard to be away from one of my kids during a pandemic, especially in the beginning. That has been challenging in different ways because I feel a lot of guilt for not being there, but then I realize that as a mom you can't protect your kids from everything, as far as the feelings that they're feeling.

I'm sure it's strange for your sons to be separated from each other, too. Are they close, Bowie and Rylee? So for me personally, I'm honest with my kids, and I tell them what's going on. I might not share everything, and I might share too much, but I think it's better for me to be honest about how I'm feeling and what's going on without burdening them too much, because they are children. I’m letting them know that I am not perfect, I don't have it all figured out, I don't have all the answers, but we're doing what we can and we'll get through it somehow.
