Tesla has issued a recall for certain Model X and Model S cars over a corrosion issue that mostly affects drivers in winter weather states where certain de-icing chemicals are used on roadways
built before April 2016 could be affected by corrosion caused by “calcium or magnesium road salts rather than sodium chloride ,” which are used by some municipalities as de-icing agents in winter weather. The Model S recall was originally issued in 2018 but has been updated as of February 5th, 2020. The Model X recall was just issued. News service Reuters says the recall affects about 15,000 Model X vehicles.
Tesla says that even if the bolts and motor fail completely, drivers will still be able to steer their cars, but will notice that it takes more effort, especially at low speeds. Tesla’s website says they are issuing the voluntary recall as a proactive preventative measure and so far, no collisions or injuries related to the corrosion have been reported. For Model X owners, Tesla says any repairs needed, including replacement of the steering motor if needed, will be at no charge.
