Tesla's Cybertruck has a new electric rival, meet Nikola’s hydrogen Badger pickup:
’s Tesla and Rivian in targeting drivers who want high-performance work trucks that don’t spew tailpipe exhaust from gasoline and diesel fuel.
While Tesla’s Cybertruck and Rivian’s R1T are to provide over 300 miles of range from fully charged lithium-ion battery packs, Phoenix-based Nikola is targeting double that range, using a combination of bothand the hydrogen fuel cell system it developed for long-haul semis. The company claims that its blended electric powertrain will let Badger generate more than 906 horsepower and accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 2.9 seconds.
“The program will help drive down the cost of the fuel-cell components on our semi-truck while accelerating the hydrogen station rollout,” said Nikola President Mark Russell. “Giving customers the option to order a fuel-cell or battery electric version will ensure we drive the cost down for everyone across our lineup.”Tesla
The company says public demonstrations of the pickup are planned for around September at its annual Nikola World conference in Phoenix. Monday’s announcement didn’t include pricing or expected start of production. The company will also promote the vehicle in a reality series with Heavy D of Discovery’s “” reality TV show, highlighting the design and prototype testing process for Badger.
