Tesla is about to roll out a lot of 250kW Supercharger stations, which will put 75 miles of range into a Model 3 in 5 minutes
When it comes to charging an electric vehicle, speed comes down to the kWs. The higher the kilowatt rating, the shorter the time it takes to refill your EV's battery. Yesterday, Tesla announced that the first of its Supercharger stations has been, which is capable of a 250kW peak charge rate. That means a Tesla Model 3 can add 75 miles of range in 5 minutes and up to a theoretical 1,000 miles of range in an hour (if you do the math, you'll find that 1,000 miles in 60 minutes is 16.
Tesla said that, for now, only Model 3 owners who are in the company's Early Access Program will be able to charge up at these speeds. In the"coming months" Tesla will offer a V3 Supercharging via an over-the-air update to"all owners. The first V3 station is in Fremont, CA, but Tesla has plans to make the 250kW charging capability available throughout North America in the second quarter of 2019 and in Europe and Aisa-Pacific in the fourth quarter. The Version 2 Superchargers will be able to offer Tesla EVs a new peak charge rate of 145kW for single-vehicle charging.
The V3 stations use liquid-cooled cables as well as a new 1 MW power cabinet, which allows four Superchargers to each get 250 kW without any of the power-sharing tricks that other Supercharger stations have used. There is a new trick that all Teslas will get, called On Route Battery Warmup. This technology warms up the battery before a high-rate charge so that the battery can accept that vehicle's peak power for the longest possible time.have found that vehicles that were regularly DC fast charged,"did lose more capacity than the control vehicles, [but] that difference is small relative to the total capacity loss.
