A Tennessee family which fled their home country of Germany so they could homeschool their children based on their Christian values will get to stay in the country for at least another yearThe Romeike family has been living in Morristown, Tennessee since 2008 after leaving Germany due to restrictions on homeschooling their children. The family quickly planted roots and some of the children have even started families of their own with U.S. citizens.
In 2013, the Obama administration granted the family indefinitely deferred action status which removed their fear of deportation. However, in September, the family was given four weeks to prepare for deportation. The joined the fight to help the family, raising awareness, creating a petition for the Biden administration, and contacting the proper leadership handling their case.
Last week, the HSLDA reports the efforts paid off somewhat. HSLDA attorney Kevin Boden says “I spoke personally with the ICE officer in Knoxville, who told me we can anticipate them signing the order of supervision out for another year. And while we are very grateful for this news, we are continuing to advocate for a long-term solution for the Romeike family to allow their permanent stay in the United States.
The family is meeting with ICE on Wednesday when the move is expected to become official, but HSLDA says there is more work to be done to make sure the family can remain Tennessee residents for the long term.
