Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz has been in the news recently due to speculations about his potential move from UMNO to PKR . Tengku Zafrul has addressed these speculations, confirming that he had discussions about joining PKR , but hasn't made a decision on leaving UMNO or joining any political party. Tengku Zafrul is required to resign as MITI Minister in 2025.
Previously unknown outside of the corporate world, Tengku Zafrul was appointed Finance Minister in 2020 by former Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. He holds a unique position as a Cabinet member in three different administrations: under Muhyiddin, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri, and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. However, this streak will end soon unless a General Election or Parliamentary By-Election occurs, and he wins a Parliamentary seat. Tengku Zafrul MUST resign as MITI Minister next year. Why? To be appointed to the Cabinet in Malaysia, an individual must be a member of either House of Parliament, the Dewan Rakyat or the Dewan Negara. As a Senator, Tengku Zafrul is a member of the Dewan Negara, which is why he currently holds the MITI Minister position. The Malaysian Cabinet is the executive branch of the Government, a council of ministers accountable to Parliament and led by the Prime Minister.
