KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's decision to confirm its involvement in the Belt and Road Initiative , making it one of the first in ASEAN to do so, has further cemented the economic partnership between the country and China, according to Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz .

Tengku Zafrul said Chinese companies have invested significantly in Malaysia, from large-scale infrastructure projects like the East Coast Rail Link to high-tech industries in special economic zones. Meanwhile, Tengku Zafrul said the second cycle of the Five-Year Programme for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Malaysia is set to further deepen the linkages between the nation’s industries in priority sectors such as high-tech manufacturing and the digital economy.

Tengku Zafrul noted that today’s event, which was organised by the Southeast Asia Research Centre for Humanities , took place as Malaysia and China celebrate a significant milestone -- the 50th anniversary of the two nations’ diplomatic relations. Tengku Zafrul said China has been Malaysia’s largest trading partner for the last 15 consecutive years, with bilateral trade of RM450.8 billion in 2023.
