After 40 years on the road, San Antonio Tejano star Shelly Lares is shifting her focus to production — and a new career.

On her first solo album, 1989’s “Tu Solo Tu,” for example, she wrote and produced “I’m Over You” and “Forever You and Me,” two English-language, pop-influenced songs that utilized keyboards and a digital bass drum machine for a more contemporary sound than most Tejano records at the time. When she was 10, her sister asked her to perform a song with the Tejano band she’d hired to play her wedding. But Lares spoke little Spanish and knew even less about Tejano music.
“I was amazed at her talent, at how she projected her voice and exuded such confidence,” Torres said. “We became so close she performed at my wedding and I came to her birthday party.”“Why not?” she said. “She and Selena were both fun, young singers who already had a band to play with. We all got along great.
Not long after scoring her biggest hit, 1994’s “Soy Tu Amor,” which she said was the most played Latin song of that year, she signed with Sony Discos, the major record label’s Latin arm.
