Last year, Sam Bankman-Fried teleconferenced in for the final mainstage session of a very crypto-filled Startup Grind. But in 2023, the Redwood City conference cast aside the blockchain for tech’s newest plaything: artificial intelligence.

The conference takes place Tuesday and Wednesday in Redwood City and draws founders from around the world as well as some of the Bay Area’s premier investors. Visitors this year can expect a simple but drastic change: The blockchain is out; artificial intelligence is in.

This year, with a post-blockchain hangover and a tightening economy, crypto is left in the peripheries. “Every year has its own asset class,” Abraham said. “You had your meme stocks and crypto in 2021.” Now, he said, people are getting into government-backed treasury bills.
