1,500 people have been evacuated from the village.

The residents of Whaley Bridge have been allowed to briefly return to their homes to collect essential belongings amid warnings they could die if the dam bursts.

Further evacuations were made ‘due to a potential increase in risk of adverse weather in coming days and the ongoing risk of the Toddbrook Reservoir breaching’.The dam is now deemed structurally unsound and if it bursts will pose a ‘substantial threat to life,’ according to the assistant chief constable of Derbyshire police.

Some residents left their homes in tears while others remained stoic as they collected everything they will need for the coming days and weeks. Tracey Coleman was returning to her home, which is just outside the road closures in the area, on Saturday. Hanna Sillitoe, who lives in the neighbouring hamlet Buxworth, visited the ‘deserted’ village yesterday.
