Donati and others warn about free-for-all that has followed 2021 Supreme Court decision.
More than half of TCU’s student athletes have reported NIL deals, Donati said, and many are using that money to support their families. But the lack of national rules has created unsustainable confusion, he said.
Donati said he hopes to see fresh momentum from Wednesday’s hearing, called by chairman Rep. Roger Williams, R-Willow Park., Williams recalled the $10 monthly stipend he and other players received on top of their scholarships more than half a century ago. What they called their ‘laundry money’ was a far cry from the millions involved in today’s NIL deals.
The committee’s top Democrat, Rep. Nydia Velázquez of New York, said that even modest NIL deals can allow athletes of color to start saving money and building generational wealth.the largest deals to top male athletes in football and basketball. “The most important issues that must be addressed in college sports are the abuse, mistreatment and lack of attention to player health and safety at the hands of coaches and support staff,” she said.
Ellzey said he wouldn’t have had the wherewithal to handle the influx of money some student athletes are seeing and asked Donati, a former sports agent, how the university is helping students understand how to make the most of their opportunities.
