Lenny Kravitz hosted the annual awards show at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre Monday night.
While reflecting on her career, Swift said she always tried to “make the right decision” for herself at the time “whether or not it had ever been successfully done before.” Though oftentimes in the industry it is assessed whether a decision is a good one or an example to prove it is, Swift noted that the “coolest ideas or moves or choices are the new ones and the ones that set a new precedent.”
After thanking her fans for always supporting her in her career decisions whether it be “switching genres or rerecording all of my old music,” she emphasized, “But I do want to say the thing with these exciting nights and moments and specifically this award is they’re shining a light on the choices I made that worked out.”
“The hundreds or thousands of dumb ideas that I’ve had are what led me to my good ideas,” Swift said. She later encouraged everyone to “give yourself permission to fail.” “I try as hard as I can not to fail because it’s embarrassing but I do give myself permission to and you should too. So go easy on yourself,” she said before later quipping that maybe it will lead to someone thinking they’ve been “innovative” like her.
During the ceremony, Pink also received the Icon Award for “her impact on pop culture, longevity and continued relevance as a touring and radio force with a loyal fan base worldwide.” Kelly Clarkson, Pink, Keith Urban, Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo, Muni Long, Cody Johnson and Coldplay were among the performers to hit the stage Monday night.
