The moment has included private tours of the Chanel archives and Gabrielle Chanel’s apartment, in addition to meeting Virginie Viard before the show. “I felt more connected to Gabrielle Chanel’s story than I expected to,” she said. “Her avant-garde leanings, her eclectic background, what a modern free-thinking woman she was.”
While sitting in the front row at Chanel might be a new experience for Russell, her relationship with the brand goes back to her childhood. “I’ve loved Chanel since I was a little girl,” she said. A keen thrifter, she trained her eye by shopping with her mother; her prized possession is a ’90s-era Chanel baguette-style handbag she found in New York years ago and still takes with her everywhere.
