If you know you're not going to make it by the April 18 deadline, here's what you can do -- file for an extension.
You have until 11:59 pm on April 18 to file electronically.
However, if you owe the government you do need to pay by April 18 or you could face a Failure to Pay penalty. Stacy Engle, an IRS spokesperson based in Indianapolis, said you should pay what you can by April 18.
