Tasmania is slowly becoming a hub for whisky lovers, but it's not the first time the island state has seen a distilling boom.

Cascade Brewery opened in 1825, but at the time, more people were choosing whisky.

But the whisky boom was short-lived. With Sydney struggling to grow barley, there were concerns about a food shortage. In 1839, distilling was prohibited again, though hundreds of illegal stills would have continued making spirits. "But it left an opportunity for the modern-day era to start up again, and boy, hasn't it started up in a big way?"This week is Tasmanian Whisky Week, with dozens of events around the state celebrating the spirit and the now 80 local distilleries making it.
