The City of Corner Brook is using this drone to help create a forest inventory as part of its participation in the federal 2 Billion Trees project. Contributed “We have calculated and timed it precisely, so the drone can complete a whole grid cell section without having to worry about having to go back to a specific spot to complete the imagery" -Kirstin Mercer
“We take that data with the data from the drone and we’re able to complete a pretty complete picture of how many trees there are, what types of trees there are and so on,” said Mercer. “It will outline the actual canopy from above of each tree, so, instead of it looking like a big green mass, there are individually traced-out trees.”
She emphasized that, while the drone is getting an image of the whole city, the technology is not invading people’s privacy and is strictly being used to gather data on nothing but vegetation.Once the entire city has been mapped out, Mercer will scour the images to identify areas where trees seem to be growing well, to determine why that might be so, and areas that could be filled in with newly planted trees, including what species should go there.
